Cambodia Now Education Society

It is time to say goodbye!

Dear Wonderful Cambodia Now Sponsors and Supporters,

This message is to inform you that the activities of Cambodia Now Education Society will be coming to an end after an extraordinary ten years on December 1, 2017.  A few things have led to this decision, and we are so grateful that you have been on this journey with us.

Unfortunately, Cambodia is in a period of political unrest, and a fearful time for some Cambodians, particularly those that are seeking change for their country. We have recently seen the arrest of opposition leaders, imprisonment of those who have spoken out against the ruling party, and the closure of Cambodia’s free press, The Cambodian Daily.  Due to these events, Runny Vorng, our partner and school Director has decided to take a more active role in politics during this vital time in Cambodia, and we fully support her decision to do so. As well, Megan Morrison, who previously worked to manage the organization with the support of the Board and volunteers has taken on a new role as a social worker in HIV care in British Columbia. This change has made it difficult for Megan to continue to support this project long term.

The school that was previously used for Cambodia Now activities and sponsorship will now close. The Cambodia Now students have the uniforms and school supplies needed to continue with Khmer school, however they will no longer be attending English classes. Their time in English school will always be valuable and we hope they will continue learning and building on a solid foundation.

With the closure of the school, two of our teachers (Teacher Bunnat and Teacher Sophea) have decided to start their own education project, a small English and Khmer school calledMeattophum!  We would like to contribute the remaining finances that Cambodia Now holds (approx. $3000) to help them to develop this new project, which will support some of the students previously sponsored through Cambodia Now.

We so appreciate all that you have given to these kids, and hope that you will look back on your contributions positively. In the last 10 years since the initiation of Cambodia Now, Cambodia has seen a major growth in GDP, as well as a dramatic increase in NGO activity and in particular NGOs supporting education and health which were part of the Millennium Development Goals. There are more organizations supporting children in Cambodia than ever before and we were proud to have been one of the NGO’s that initiated this work in Sihanoukville, Cambodia.

Please scroll below to see how the kids have grown and developed thanks to you!

Sincere Regards and Best Wishes,

Cambodia Now Board of Directors (Sharon Barnes, Lauren Ma, Megan Morrison, Meagan Stowe)

Cambodia Now Education Society is a Canadian non-profit organization that supports grassroots education projects in Cambodia.

Cambodia Now is a community of teachers, parents, children and volunteers.  We support Cambodia’s poorest kids from ‘primary to professional’.  We ensure that the children’s basic needs are met and that they have the educational and emotional support that they need to support their future families and become leaders in their community.  We believe in grassroots development and empowering local families and we rely entirely on volunteers, locals and individuals (like you!) for sponsorship and support. Learn more
